I’m not a fan of birthdays.
There is something about being reminded that you are now another year older that bugs me. I guess I’m not comfortable with the daily reminders that the life counter is adding up. Sure, I appreciate the well wishes on the day, but, personally, I would rather celebrate with my family and maybe a few close friends. Then again, to be fully honest I would rather play golf, but that’s another story.
Part of the thing that I don’t like about birthdays is the gifts. I may be one of the few people you will ever meet that is not comfortable receiving gifts, especially on my birthdays. I can’t explain it, but please pray for my wife. She has to hear about my dislike for gifts every year, and never listens. I love her for that.
Knowing that people want to celebrate my birthday even when I would rather not, I have come up with a better way to celebrate and I invite you to participate. On March 7, I invite you to give to someone else. In other words, next Wednesday I invite you to do a generous act of giving, to someone you don’t know, simply because God has blessed you and calls each of us to be a blessing to others.
There are many different ways you could do this. It could be paying for a tank of gas for someone. It could be picking up the tab for someone’s coffee order. It could even be taking bottles of water to people who are working. The sky is limitless on how you can give generously.
In this world we live in today, think about the impact these acts of generous giving could have.
So March 7 … give generously and randomly to someone simply because God loves you.
